A peek at the cheeks: Gorgeous Cosmetics’ Cheek Creme in Caramel Whip

Brandied coffee, honey wine, creme caramel.. are you drooling yet?

Gorgeous Cosmetics packaged your next natural flush in a petite plastic compact — the thing is, there are are six colours to choose between. Do you feel like a glass of tawny port or a helping of strawberry shortcake? It all depends on your appetite :)

Swatch of Caramel Whip

Swatch of Caramel Whip

I felt inclined to scoop up Caramel Whip. The texture is creamy, the colour payoff is equivalent to the contents of the pan (as it should be) and application is a cinch. For those who don’t have a foundation brush, your ring finger will do. As for wear time, Caramel Whip lasted 10+ hours.

In terms of concerns, I was worried about layering a cream blush over my powder foundation. So, how did I overcome this? By repeatedly dabbing my cheeks. It was a “slow” uphill climb, but I eventually reached the burnt pink peak.

Do you love watermelon, but despise the sugar content and those darn seeds? Covergirl’s lipPerfection Jumbo Gloss Balm in Ruby Twist delivers a sweet dose of fruit without having to count calories or deal with sticky fingers.

Not quite robust as its namesake, Ruby Twist still passes for a low-maintenence, everyday colour. If you’re a fan of Clinique’s Chubby Stick in Chunky Cherry, Ruby Twist is a budget-friendly dupe without the hint of mint.

The goods…

  • Available in 16 colours
  • Glossy lips without feeling tacky/sticky
  • Shea and mango butters help keep your lips feeling soft

Weekly nail review: Hello Darling’s Trumped

Hello Darling's Trumped

Hello Darling’s Trumped

Hello Darling’s Trumped isn’t without its luster, shine and golden sparkle. Trumped is opaque after two coats, however I did notice brush strokes in the finish. With that said, this is a common occurrence in most metallic formulas. The only thing I cannot comment on is wear, because I had to remove my polish prior to Erin’s Nail Art Class. From wearing other Hello Darling shades, I can attest their formula lasts at least seven days.

—————

Scott and I have been a bit obsessed with the TV show Parks and Recreationmore specifically the character progression throughout its latest season. Recently we’ve seen a lot of Councilman Jamm, a dentist by trade who manages to screw things up for the main character Leslie Knope, played by Amy Poehler. Jamm is a bit of an opportunist and usurper — his hijinx entail bribing Leslie out of her office, fighting to bring Ponch Burger to Pawnee, interrupting Leslie and Ben’s wedding, suing Ron for $50 Million and even accepting bribes for votes. Truth be told, he’s a bit of a jerk who exclaims stupid things like, “you’ve been Jammed,” “Retro Jammed!,” etc. I’ve likened this character to Donald Trump (this is how I’ve landed the plane, folks!); they both have bad hair, come up with some lamebrained ideas and don’t mind touting the fact they’re moneyed up.

You can so see Trump saying, “you’ve been Trumped” now, admit it.

Lipstick on the cheap: Gorgeous Cosmetics

IMG_1925

A few weeks ago I splurged and picked up five lipsticks for $25.00 when I attended Salon Melbourne. You read that right, I picked up five for $25! Normally, Gorgeous lipstick retails for $35.00/tube — I took this as a sign to try something new.

Out of the five colours I chose, I was only happy with how well two performed. The other three, while pretty in hue, were disappointing. Hey, we can’t win ‘em all!

Working from love to loathe, here are a few “tasting” notes I took down while test-driving all five colours.

Wearing Berry Intense

Wearing Berry Intense

Gorgeous Cosmetics' Berry Intense

Gorgeous Cosmetics’ Berry Intense

Berry Intense is the star performer out of the bunch. The formula was creamy, the colour wore evenly and lasted for well over eight hours. By quitting time, I had to scrub my lips in addition to washing my face. Berry Intense is another true red within my lip collection and most certainly passes for a dupe of Giorgio Armani’s Rouge d’Armani 400. Pick this colour up before it sells out!

IMG_2018

Wearing Innocence

IMG_2012

Gorgeous Cosmetics’ Innocence

Innocence is a muted rose red with subtle purple undertones. After four hours of wear it still managed to hold onto its glossy finish; hour eight marked colour dry out. Unfortunately, Innocence is sold out, check your local stockist for availability.

Wearing Brigitte

Wearing Brigitte

Gorgeous Cosmetics' Brigitte

Gorgeous Cosmetics’ Brigitte

Brigitte, a soft pink with a touch of frost, wore unevenly over eight hours of wear, was drying and even emphasized flakes as the day progressed. While Brigitte is a beautiful colour, my gut’s telling me there are better performers out there. Give Brigitte a miss.

IMG_1997

Wearing Inspiration

IMG_1991

Gorgeous Cosmetics’ Inspiration

Inspiration was less than inspirational. A tawny pink with orange undertones, Inspiration lasted six hours and sucked all the moisture out of my lips; I made it a point to scrub my lips in the ladies bathroom and start fresh with a random lippie in my purse. A definite skip in my book.

IMG_2052

Wearing Warm Mauve

IMG_2061

Gorgeous Cosmetics’ Warm Mauve

First off, let me start things off by saying Warm Mauve has to be an insult to “old lady pink” lipsticks. Warm Mauve is the worst of the worst. It was difficult to apply, drying from the start and didn’t even last two hours. When I removed Warm Mauve last Friday, I think I also removed the top layer of skin on my lips. Bin this baby.

In the end I walked away with five colours for less than the price of one; reason being these colours have been discontinued as Gorgeous Cosmetics have released 30 new colours. The darker shades were the best performers and the most interesting — they performed as good as, if not better than, Giorgio Armani and Burberry. My biggest hope for the newer colours is consistency in terms of wear, feel and overall performance.

Each colour has a personality of its own and adds a bit of flare to the day; I just don’t want to have to worry about my lips looking like joke, because they are my pride and joy.

The Bagful breakdown:

Total amount for Gorgeous Lipstick:

  • Five for $25.00 AUS on this occasion, however they normally retail for $35.00 AUS / $25.00 USD. Discontinued shades are now selling for $12.95 AUS until they sell out.

Value for money spent (performance and quality):

  • 10 out of 10 bags for Innocence and Berry Intense
  • 6 out of 10 bags for Brigitte
  • 4 out of 10 for Inspiration
  • 1 out of 10 for Warm Mauve

Haven’t heard of Gorgeous Cosmetics? They are a Melbourne-based company with a penchant for the stage, the screen and the runway. Their colours are on trend and vibrant. Recently, Gorgeous made their move to the States and Karen of MBB seems to like what she’s tried so far :)

Kiehl’s Actively Correcting & Beautifying BB Cream – swatches and review

It’s just like saying ATM Machine — ATM stands for Automatic Teller Machine, so are you going to take a $20 out of the Automatic Teller Machine Machine? A few months ago I learned the error of my ways by repeating the trend and calling Beauty Balms, BB Creams; is it a balm or is it a cream? And how do we even begin to address the CC variant?

But I digress.

Recently Kiehl’s released their own beauty balm, Actively Correcting & Beautifying BB Cream. Presently, this offering is available in three shades: Fair, Light and Natural in Australia and two shades: light and medium in the U.S. Now that summer’s through, I found Light to be the best match for me.

Kiehl's Actively Correcting & Beautifying BB Cream

Kiehl’s Actively Correcting & Beautifying BB Cream

Light

Flip top

Flip top

In this 30 ml tube, Kiehl’s promises an “Instantly perfecting formula clinically proven to correct skin tone irregularities.” What I got was a fairly easy to use beauty balm to help with concealing imperfections. One week later, my skin hasn’t necessarily improved and my rosacea has even slightly flared up, I’m not too sure if this is my skin’s way of adjusting to something new. The scent is pleasant and light — it reminds me of Clinique’s foundation infused with the tiniest amount of maple syrup.

What else?? Did you notice the sticker on the tube? Underneath it reads “SPF 50 PA+++”. So, why did we cover it up? For those who live in the States, if you were to travel to Oz with the SPF you purchased over there, it still wouldn’t offer you the same amount of protection. Put simply, there’s a huge hole in the ozone over Australia and New Zealand thanks to years of pollution and you can pretty much go from undercooked to crispy in less than an hour. SPF 30 is the minimum requirement in Australia and Kiehl’s beauty balm just meets the standard. Want to learn more? Check out my in-depth Bobbi Brown BB review I posted last year.

And what’s this nonsense about PA+++? Just think of it this way, SPF helps to protect you from UVB and PA aids with UVA protection. Pretty Gossip breaks things down further for you into terms you can understand and even addresses the ‘+’. As for the Vitamin C, it’s known for its “clarifying” properties.

How well does it last? Last Sunday I applied Kiehl’s Beauty Balm around 9 AM and by bedtime, call it 9 PM, I was pretty smitten with how well it still looked.

Swatches of Kiehl's Actively Correcting & Beautifying BB Cream in light

Swatches of Kiehl’s Actively Correcting and Beautifying BB Cream in light – heavy (left) blended (right)

In terms of texture/consistency, Kiehl’s Beauty Balm initially dispenses slightly runny and then turns creamy prior to application. To apply I’ll grab my liquid foundation brush and start at the centre of my face, making sure to blend and sheer the coverage out as I reach my chin, scalp, temples and ears. A small dollop, about the size of a five cent piece/dime, is all you’ll really need. Want a bit more coverage? Dispense a nickel sized amount.

Afterwards, I set the balm with a small amount of powder foundation and Hourglass’ Ambient Lighting Powder in Ethereal Light. As the day progresses I’ve found this formula turns dewier than I would like; to take it down a notch, I place a tissue over my face and gently run the pads of my fingers over the trouble spots. This process helps to sop up the shine and re-blend the colour.

A glimpse at the lips: L’Oreal’s Shine Caresse Lip Colour in Princess

Over a year ago I was almost positive I was going to purchase YSL’s Rouge pur Couture Glossy Stain. So, what happened? First, there’s the scent (I couldn’t get past it), it reeked like really bad red wine and second, it was expensive. The coupled negatives were enough for me to warrant passing on something which was voted the “2012 Breakthrough” by Allure readers.

I hoped and prayed something would come out and rival this glossy to matte beauty — the mothership, L’Oreal, delivered. Well, sort of.

IMG_0557

L’Oreal’s Shine Caresse Lip Colours have swept the makeup world off its feet, but part of me has been left wanting so much more.

First impressions matter. For instance, let’s start with the tube’s shape. Intuitively, one would assume the wider part of the tube was the base; after I took the tester off the shelf I tried (unsuccessfully) to twist off the narrower end. Oops.

Strike that and reverse it.

The doe foot applicator is of the floral variety — petal-like and contoured with a spine for optimal product delivery. Personally, I love this sort of applicator, because it expedites the application process and works well with my lips.

The magical wand

The magical applicator

The product itself is interesting, take this as good, bad or indifferent. It slips on the lips easily due to it being water based, but after an hour or so, it becomes tacky/sticky on the lips. At this stage I find that I’m more aware of my lips and have this distinct feeling of being worn by something instead of things being the other way around. I hope you get what I mean.

There’s also a vast difference in scent — I purchased Princess (a.k.a. Coral Tattoo) from my local Priceline and ordered Berry Persistent and Pink Resistance from Ulta; Princess smells like Sweet Tarts, whereas the other two smell like baby wipes.

In terms of appearance and wear time the glossiness lasts for an hour, tops, a light sheen sticks around for a few more hours (the sticky phase) and eventually it dries down to a soft, matte stain. Another thing to be aware of is the colour pools within the dips and troughs of your lips. Just be prepared for the colour appearing uneven; I noticed this the most with Berry Persistent.

As for the colour, Princess is a heavy leaning orange coral. Not sure if you can notice, but I wore Princess to the Unico relaunch.

Back to Basics: MAC Pro Longwear Paint Pots in Painterly and Bare Study

MAC’s Bare Study (left) and Painterly (right)

Great for everyday — wear them alone, together or as a base for a completely different eye look.

IMG_0946

Bare Study

Bare Study resembles champagne with a bit of silver and white pearl. To apply, I suggest using your ring finger or an eye brush intended for cream eye shadows (Chanel’s Complexion brush No. 10 works well). I’m still not brave enough to forgo using an eyeshadow base thanks to my oily lids; with that said, a few friends of mine can attest to the fact MAC’s Paint Pot formula doesn’t crease on them.

For a cheaper alternative to Bare Study, Maybelline’s Eye Studio Color Tattoo Metal Eyeshadow in Barely Branded is a close second with undertones of gold.

IMG_0955

Painterly

Painterly is a nude cream with pink and grey undertones. A few years ago I tried Painterly, but returned it because I didn’t like how poorly it performed (keep in mind, this was before I learned about the wonders of eyeshadow primer). I couldn’t track down a proper dupe, but if you know of something please feel free to chime in :)

Eyes to mesmerise: Clinique’s Chubby Stick Shadow Tint For Eyes in Curvaceous Coal 08

Today let’s play $25,000 Pyramid — I’ll start.

It’s short, cylindrical in shape, similar to a pencil, can be used for colouring and it’s meant to be worn on the face.

Any guesses?

Clinique's Chubby Stick Shadow Tiny for Eyes

Clinique’s Chubby Stick Shadow Tiny for Eyes

IMG_0865

IMG_0876Clinique recently released Chubby Stick Shadow Tint for Eyes and here’s what they have to say about them — “Sheer, creamy confection to jazz up your makeup routine—in 12 super-wearable shades. Layerable, long-wearing and versatile, too.”

Fundamentally, Clinique’s version is sound, but in practice it doesn’t quite cut it for me. While I do love the ease of applying straight from the tube – it’s like drinking from a bottle of soda or eating peanut butter straight out of the jar; I know it’s wrong, I feel slightly selfish and I can’t help but feel like something’s missing.

This is how the three scenarios played out:

A. I need a makeup brush for refinement and blending.

B. The soda is flat, what a waste.

and

C. Graham crackers would’ve helped to make for an awesome combo.

Curvaceous Coal is a creamy grey with dark blue undertones (think of smoke pluming from a chimney) with the lightest touch of shimmer. The product applies easily, however I have a difficult time with honing in on the outer corners of my eyes due to the tip being too large for my short eyelids. Initially it looks as if I kept both eyes closed while applying Curvaceous Coal; grey blobs do not look cute, trust me. In order to get around this issue, I dabbed the smallest amount of colour on my lids and blended the colour out with MAC’s 217.

Ideally, I wish I could’ve skipped this step, but it’s a necessary step for me. My plans for quick and easy makeup pretty much went out the window.
